Dallas Weekend part 2 - Sunday, Badge #2

Oct 17, 07:54 PM

Sunday was a much happier day.

We had breakfast at Cafe Brazil in the Bishop Arts District. It was good but not spectacular and I got the impression from the waitress that she was quite relieved when Judah and I changed our orders from espresso drinks to regular coffees. So that doesn’t bode well for their espresso bar.

Then we were off to the zoo. I really like the Dallas Zoo. I had never been and shall have to go many more times to make up for that oversight. Something to keep in mind is that if you have a zoo membership at a partner zoo then all of the people in your party can get in to the Dallas Zoo for half off. That was nice. Here are a few photos. The rest are viewable on my flickr page.

We went back to the Bishop Arts District for a little bit of shopping. We bought chocolate at Dude, Sweet Chocolate and a few strange sodas at The Soda Gallery.

Then we had lunch at Fuel City Tacos. They were really good. Then we headed home.

The trip was fun and memorable but as I said in my last post, I don’t want to ever go to the fair again. It was hot. THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE. I don’t like crowds. And it was so commercial. I wanted to see country fair stuff. Instead we mostly saw cheap, made in China crap like stuffed animals and sunglasses and key chains. I enjoyed the animals and the cars and the Home of Tomorrow. But I felt like maybe the Home of Tomorrow was a regular exhibit at Fair Park so I could probably see it at another time. I could be wrong though. We finally found the prized entries to the many cooking and making categories but they were all behind glass and tucked behind and around demonstration kitchens and a puppet show. They seemed as if they were an after thought. Did I mention that there were too many people? Also, it was just stupidly priced. $2.50 for a bottle of water and you aren’t allowed to bring your own.

So all in all, I’m glad I went. Really enjoyed the zoo. The hotel was nice and posh, etc. Food, not at the fair, was good.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that in addition to trying the fried “bubble gum” we also tried the fried mashed potatoes and the fried chips and salsa. The mashed potatoes were ok and I’d eat them again if I were really hungry. The chips and salsa tasted like chips and salsa but gave the distinct impression that someone else had chewed them up and then spit them out before I tried them.

  1. That’s a really good picture of Chris sitting on top of the termite mound. Also, I’ll send a link to a review of most of the BBQ, and several of the fried “foods” at the Fair.
